Earl Watkins Jr., CEO of the Sunflower Electric Power Corp., plans to step down in January 2012, the Associated Press reported.

Watkins was key in arranging a deal with Kansas's then Gov. Mark Parkinson that will allow Sunflower to build a new coal-fired power plant. The deal stirred statewide controversy as environmentalists protested construction of a new coal plant.
