NRC approves ABWR

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission formally accepted GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s application to renew the design certificate for the company’s advanced boiling water (ABWR) technology.

GEH wanted to renew the design certification for 15 years beyond the certification’s June 2012 expiration date. The application includes the NRC’s requirement for an aircraft-impact assessment.

The ABWR was one of the first Generation III models certified for U.S. construction in 1997.
