Petrobras hits 301-m oil column with sixth Libra well

Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) reported that the 3-BRSA-1322-RJS well encountered a 301-m oil column in the northwestern portion of its Libra block, confirming similar reservoir characteristics and oil quality found in other wells in the area.

The results indicate a possible connection between the 3-BRSA-1322-RJS well, also known as 3-RJS-741 and informally as NW5, and the previously drilled wells. The presence of 28º gravity oil was confirmed in reservoirs demonstrating “excellent productivity,” the Brazilian state-owned firm said.

The 301-m oil column is the largest discovered by the Libra consortium thus far. The well is 8 km northeast of discovery well 2-ANP-2A-RJS (OGJ Online, Nov. 25, 2014), and 200 km offshore Rio de Janeiro state.

Six wells have been drilled thus far on Libra, including the 3-BRSA-1305A-RJS well, also known as 3-RJS-739A, last month (OGJ Online, Feb. 29, 2016). A seventh well, 3-BRSA-1339-RJS or 3-RJS-742, is being drilled in the northwest area.

Petrobras is operator of the Libra consortium with 40% interest. Partners are Royal Dutch Shell PLC 20%, Total SA 20%, and China National Petroleum Corp. and CNOOC Ltd. each with 10%. Contract management is conducted by Pre-Sal Petroleo SA.
