India: Group expanding Kharsang field in Upper Assam

A group led by GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd. is further developing Kharsang oil field in the Upper Assam basin in northeastern India.

The group has spud KPL-C, second in a seven-well development campaign expected to be finished in early 2012. A stepout in the eastern part of the field, it targets the shallow C-50 and D-00 reservoirs and the deeper Girujan formation. It will be deviated 712 m to the east-southeast from the existing plinth of the KSG-39 well to a depth of 1,220 m true vertical depth with the option to continuing to 1,598 m of appropriate.

The first well, KSG-57, formerly KPL-A, identified four intervals totaling 20 m of net sand for testing based on wireline log interpretation, formation pressure data from sequential formation testing, and sidewall core results. It is to be tested with a workover rig deployed at the site on Aug. 21.

Operator GeoEnpro Petroleum is a joint venture of GeoPetrol and Jubilant Enpro, a member of the wider Jubilant Bhartia Group. Jubilant Energy NV has 25% interest in the block through its subsidiary, Jubilant Energy (Kharsang) Pvt. Ltd.  Also in the group are Oil India Ltd. and GeoPetrol.

The Kharsang license covers 10 sq km. Kharsang field, 50 miles east of Digboi, was discovered in 1976 and went on trial production in 1980 and commercial output in 1983. Cumulative production is 9 million bbl of oil to June 30, 2010. The field has 35 producing wells, 17 shut-in, and four abandoned.
