WASHINGTON, DC, May 4 -- The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement invited public comments on an environmental assessment (EA) submitted by Nexen Petroleum USA Inc. with its initial exploration plan.

The initial plan involves Gulf of Mexico deepwater activity and will be completed in accordance with safety and environmental regulations enacted since the 2010 Macondo well accident and spill, BOEMRE said.

BOEMRE said the initial exploration plan includes four proposed exploratory wells in 2,860 ft of water 99 miles off Louisiana. The plan was deemed “submitted” consistent with federal regulations once Nexen submitted all materials and provided documentation, triggering a 30-day period during which BOEMRE will analyze and evaluate it, the agency said.

The 30-day period includes 10 days during which public comments will be accepted, it indicated. BOEMRE said documents can be viewed and comments will be accepted online at www.boemre.gov/PublicComment.htm.
