Guyana: Takutu basin wildcat series starting

By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, Jan. 3
– Groundstar Resources Ltd., Calgary, was to have spud at yearend 2010 the first of two exploratory wells in the Takutu basin in southern Guyana.

The company was to have spud by Dec. 31 the Apoteri K-2 well on the Takutu block on the Karanambo prospect. The well is a 600-m offset to the 1982 Home Oil Karanambo-1 discovery that tested at 411 b/d of 42° gravity oil from a Manari-Apoteri fractured reservoir at 8,946-9,290 ft (see map, OGJ, Apr. 26, 1982, p. 102).

Projected total depth is 11,000 ft measured depth. The site is 200 miles south of Georgetown near the border with Brazil.

Groundstar, operator of the K-2 well, is carried for a 10% net interest to commercial production. Partners are Canacol Energy Ltd. and Sagres Energy Inc.

Plans are being formulated to drill a second exploration well on the block by May 2011 on either the Rewa or Pirara River prospects depending on the Apoteri K-2 outcome. Canacol Energy would operate after Apoteri K-2 has been drilled.
