Scientific Drilling International (SDI), a directional drilling and wellbore placement service company, has promoted Chip Abrant to the role of senior vice president of global operations and sales. In his new position, he will lead the Western and Eastern Hemisphere operations, and the sales and technical support teams.
Abrant joined SDI in 2011 as the manager of technical services, focusing on expanding the scope and market penetration of its MagTraC MWD Ranging product line. He then held several positions including director of technical services, senior vice president of administration, and, most recently, senior vice president of drilling products and services.
He has over 32 years of oil and gas experience, including both engineering and leadership roles spanning from the operator to service sector side of the industry. Prior to joining SDI, he was a co-founder and the vice president of operations of a small exploration and production company – an early player in the Eagle Ford shale play in south Texas. He also worked for Weatherford as the US general manager of underbalanced drilling and testing, and was then promoted as the global business unit manager for controlled pressure drilling and testing. Earlier in his career, Abrant served in both technical and management capacity for several directional drilling companies.
Abrant is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Association of Drilling Engineers, and is a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in geological engineering.
