THE HAGUE, the NetherlandsShell Australia has commissioned Emerson to provide automation maintenance and reliability services for the Prelude FLNG vessel offshore northwest Australia.

The facility will process natural gas from subsea wells 475 km (300 mi) from Broome.

Since 2010, Emerson has served as the main automation contractor on the project, responsible for process control and monitoring technologies to help Shell operate the vessel safely and efficiently.

Under the new multi-year support contract, the contractor and its local partner, Western Process Controls, will provide equipment monitoring, diagnostic services, spares support, and maintenance for the facility’s control and safety systems, and thousands of instruments and valves.

Two Emerson engineers onboard Prelude will work with other team members that remotely monitor the facility’s automation from Shell’s operations center in Perth.

Here the Emerson team will consult with Shell specialists concerning a program to detect potential concerns, identify corrective actions, and arrange for delivery of any required equipment to the facility.

Prelude remains under construction in Geoje, South Korea. Once at the offshore location and commissioned, it should remain on station for at least 25 years as Shell develop gas reserves from the Prelude and Concerto fields in the Browse basin.
