DSM plans North Sea decommissioning base on Orkney

BIRMINGHAM, UK – DSM Demolition plans to create a facility on the Orkney Islands offshore northern Scotland to take advantage of the likely rise in North Sea oil and gas decommissioning work.

The proposed facility is at Lyness, on the east coast of Hoy. DSM, which claims to have extensive experience in the decommissioning of steel structures in sensitive locations across the UK, aims to become the leading onshore decommissioning company in Scotland.

An estimated 144 North Sea platforms could be decommissioned between 2019 and 2026, with an associated expenditure of $44-51 billion.

After exploring various sites along the east and west coasts of mainland Scotland, DSM identified Lyness as its preferred location because of its existing harbor, safe, deepwater anchorage, and access to oil and gas fields through Scapa Flow.

The design of the facility will follow consultations with potential clients, including oilfield operators.

DSM aims to work closely with Orkney Island Council, local businesses and the Hoy and wider Orkney community to develop the concept.

It expects to submit a formal planning application at the end of this year, followed by opening of the facility in 2018.
