DOHA, Qatar – Gulf Drilling International’s (GDI) latest liftboat Al Safliya should have started operations for Dolphin Energy offshore the UAE.

The Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine joint venture built the vessel at the Erhaba Bin Jaber Al Jalahma shipyard. The self-propelled system is designed to operate in the Middle East and North Africa region in water depths of up to 65 m (213 ft).

It features four tubular legs, a unique (according to GDI) 200-ton leg-encircling crane and a 50-ton pedestal crane.

The vessel has an open deck space of 800 sq m (8,611 sq ft) and can accommodate up to 130 personnel.

Earlier this year GDI’s jackup Al Jassra was due to start drilling three wells from Dolphin’s DOL 1 production platform offshore Qatar.

In February, Dolphin set a production milestone of 6 tcf of gas deliveries from its fields offshore Qatar to the UAE and Oman since operations started in 2007.

The Dolphin Gas Project achieved full throughput in February 2008 and since then Dolphin has supplied 2 bcf/d to these countries, accounting for 30% of the UAE’s energy needs.

Over the past year three new export gas compressors were commissioned at Dolphin’s upstream facilities to support the six compressors already in operation.
