JDR to deploy novel reelers for Aker umbilicals

Offshore staff

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, UKAker Solutions Subsea Division has contracted JDR for intervention, workover, and control systems (IWOCS).

The consignment, due to be delivered this summer 2016, includes two x 1,200-m (3,937-ft) umbilicals that will provide an annulus circulation function to subsea systems, both supplied on JDR’s new “Mark II Reeler.”

This is said to offer a significant reduction in size compared with conventional reelers, saving deck space and with lower weight for lifting and handling.

In addition, the new design includes features such as improved operator access and compliance with DNV lifting requirements, and easier access to control panels within the reeler, leading to safer operations offshore, JDR claims.

The umbilicals will be manufactured at the company’s plant in Littleport, eastern England, and the reelers at the Newcastle complex, prior to Littleport for in-house integration and testing.
