TEHRAN, Iran – North Drilling Co. (NDCO) plans to add five more offshore rigs to its drilling fleet on the Salman oil field in the Persian Gulf, according to news service Shana.

This follows a signing ceremony for a leasing agreement for the Sahar-2 rig between NDCO and Iranian Offshore Oil Co. (IOOC).

Ezatollah Hejazi, NDCO’s managing director, said the rig would help Iran increase production from the field which extends into Omani waters.

He also said that NDCO plans to increase the number of its rigs in the Persian Gulf fields.

IOOC managing director Saeid Hafezi added that NDCO can help his company rehabilitate existing wells on Salman.

Sahar-2 is the second new Iranian drilling rig in the Persian Gulf in the past three months, following an earlier rig provided by MAPNA company for IOOC.

Tenders are currently out for a third new rig.
