Allspeeds adapts cutter for North Sea abandonment work

ACCRINGTON, UK – Allspeeds has supplied an integrated guillotine cutter to Flexlife for a North Sea platform decommissioning project.

The application involves passing a hose though 2-in. pipework into a jacket leg which had previously been filled with a plugging material.

A corrosive gel breaker fluid is deployed to clear the material, after which the end of the hose is cut off and the remainder of the hose retrieved.

The unpressurized hose, which comprises multiple wire layers and an inner and outer plastic sheath, is cut using Allspeeds’ Webtool cutter. The body of the cutter is designed as a pipework component with integral flanges either side of the cutter mouth, allowing it to be integrated inline in the pipework mounted in a permanent installation.

Allspeeds adds that the configuration allows the full jetting nozzle assembly, hose swage and hose to pass through the guillotine cutter.

The dual-action cutter is designed to resist the corrosive fluid within the hose – cutter body and pipework flanged connections are fully sealed to ensure containment of the fluid – and to fully contain any spilt fluid.

It can be left in situ for 25 years without risk of seeping of any of the hazardous media, the company claims.
