Offshore staff

HOUSTON – The US Gulf of Mexico offshore rig count is up by three to 29, according to the Baker Hughes Weekly Rig Count of Jan. 22, 2016.

That number was a slight increase over the report issued on Jan. 22, 2016, which indicated 26 rigs operating in US offshore areas.

Total rigs engaged in exploration and production in the US totaled 637 for the week ended Jan. 22, down by 13 from the previous week’s rig count. The current nationwide rig count is still less than half of the prior-year level of 1,633.

The natural gas rig count was down by 8 from the past week to 127. This compares to 316 active natural gas rigs a year ago.

The oil rig count fell by five from the previous week to 510. This number not only lies on the lower end of the five-year range but is also well below the previous year’s rig count of 1,317.
