Churchill premiers stuck pipe tool in Middle East

ABU DHABI, UAEChurchill Drilling Tools is introducing its HyPR HoleSaver hydraulic pipe recovery tool in the Middle East.

The company is showcasing the technology, which has been deployed in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, at the current SPE/IADC Middle East Drilling Technology Conference and Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Stuck pipe issues can cost operators hundreds of millions of dollars a year in non-productive time. Churchill claims the HyPR limits costs by allowing operators to free pipe in just a few hours, compared to days using traditional methods.

It also claims the tool offers the simplest method to recover drill pipe rapidly and to start side tracking immediately, and that it provides a clean cut for clients wanting to maximize bottomhole assembly recovery options

The company developed the system following collaboration with deepwater Gulf of Mexico drilling teams in 2013. It has since been taken up by various major operators in Houston, Aberdeen, and Norway.
