Three-well drilling program begins offshore Senegal

Offshore staff

MELBOURNE, Australia – The Ocean Rig Athena has spudded the first of two appraisal wells on the deepwater SNE discovery offshore Senegal for the Cairn Energy-led consortium.

According to partner FAR, the aim is to prove a minimum economic field size, which FAR estimates to be around 200 MMbbl.

For operational reasons the rig will first drill the top hole of the SNE-3 well before drilling the SNE-2 well to total depth. The six-week program will be followed by coring, logging, and flow testing on SNE-2 and subsequent re-entry and evaluation of SNE-3.

The rig will then drill a well on the Buried Hills play prospect Bellatrix prospect.
