Sterling weighs drilling decisions offshore Madagascar, Mauritania

LONDON – Processed time migrated data from CGG’s recent 3D seismic survey over the Ambilobe block offshore Madagascar should be available soon, according to operator Sterling Energy.

Pre-stack depth migrated data will follow in 1Q 2016 allowing the company and partner Pura Vida Mauritius to take a “drill or drop” decision by July, when Phase 2 of the exploration period is due to expire.

CGG acquired 1,175 sq km (453 sq mi) of 3D broadband seismic over a high-graded central portion of the block.

Offshore Mauritania, Sterling concluded an agreement in June to acquire a 13.5% interest from operator Tullow Oil in PSC C-10.

This covers 10,725 sq km (4,141 sq mi) in the Nouakchott sub-basin, and is in the second phase of the exploration period (expiry date Nov. 30, 2017), with a minimum work obligation of one exploration well.

C-10 surrounds the producing Chinguetti oil field and is in water depths of 50-2,400 m (164-7,874 ft) with full legacy 3D seismic data coverage.

Tullow has identified a lower Cretaceous, Neocomian carbonate prospect in water depths of around 100 m (328 ft), and this could be drilled in early 2017 at a cost much lower than the originally budgeted $77 million, given prevailing market conditions, Sterling says.
