Offshore asset integrity a growing issue in the Middle East

ABU DHABI, UAE – Aging offshore oil and gas structures in the Middle East face challenges operating safely beyond their original design life, according to DNV GL.

Anupam Ghosal, newly appointed regional manager for Middle East and India, DNV GL - Oil & Gas, said: “Of the 700 to 800 fixed platforms and bridges in the region, we believe more than 70% are older than 25 years and some even exceed 40 years.

“The United Arab Emirates alone has about 450.”

Life extension needs to ensure continued operation within regulatory requirements, and to limit future opex, he added.

“Collaboration, joint innovation, best practice sharing and research, such as for CO2 [carbon-dioxide] injection for enhanced oil recovery, are prerequisites for smarter lifetime extension projects.”

DNV GL is working with several companies in the region to implement asset integrity management and structural integrity management systems to help them scope, design, and implement life extension strategies.

Its “missing data methodology” addresses the absence of historic documentation, a common challenge for operators in the region.

DNV GL claims to be involved in all current major offshore projects in Abu Dhabi. It is working with various major operators to provide technical integrity verification services and in-service inspection.
