Gabon launches deepwater licensing round

MASSY, France – The Gabonese Republic’s Ministry of Petroleum and Hydrocarbons has enlisted CGG as technical consultant to help promote Gabon’s 11th Licensing Round.

The focus will be on five prospective deepwater blocks.

Etienne Dieudonné Ngoubou, Minister for Petroleum and Hydrocarbons, opened the round at this week’s 22nd Africa Oil Week conference in Cape Town.

The Ministry plans road shows in Libreville, Paris and Singapore in November and in Houston on Dec. 3. Bids can be submitted between Feb. 15 and March 31, 2016. Pre-qualification will involve the mandatory purchase of a minimum amount of seismic data.

CGG says Gabon’s deepwater holds significant unexplored potential within a structurally complex setting, particularly in the presalt section.

The contractor has worked with the ministry to acquire more than 25,000 sq km (9,652 sq mi) of new 3D BroadSeis multi-client seismic data as part of a supporting integrated geoscience program. The data should improve imaging of areas downdip and adjacent to recent pre-Aptian salt discoveries such as Leopard, Diaman, Ruche, and Tortue.

It will also benefit from integrated gravity and magnetic interpretation to enhance the presalt imaging and additional, complementary datasets including offshore hydrocarbon seeps and a full geological prospectivity report.

Jean-Georges Malcor, CEO of CGG, said several companies had already pre-committed to the dataset.
