EDINBURGH, UK – Cairn Energy has updated the JM-1 exploration well offshore Morocco.
The well has been P&A’d without testing after reaching 3,711 m (12,175 ft) TVD subsea.
In the Upper Jurassic, the well confirmed the presence of heavy oil over a 110-m (361-ft) gross interval as tested in the 1968 MO-2 well, 2 km (1.2 mi) from JM-1.
However, Cairn says the reservoir quality and oil gravity at this level require further evaluation. The partners will correlate the core and log data with other wells on Cap Juby to assess the extent of moveable hydrocarbons.
In the Middle Jurassic, JM-1’s other targeted objective, there was limited primary porosity. Evaluation of well logs and side wall cores continues.
Cairn’s next well off northwest Africa will be “FAN-1” in the Sangomar, Sangomar Deep, and Rufisque blocks offshore Senegal. The targets are multiple stacked structural and stratigraphic fan closures interpreted as trapping numerous potentially thick clastic reservoirs.
Planned TD is 4,000 m (13,123 ft) in around 600 m (1,968 ft) of water. The well could take up to three months to reach target depth and to test its multiple objectives.
