Geotechnical vessel targets Asia/Pacific deepwater needs

SINGAPORE – Fugro’s offshore geotechnical division has taken delivery of the purpose-built DP-2 vessel Fugro Voyager.

The vessel is designed to perform geotechnical operations in deepwater areas of the Asia/Pacific region.

The new vessel measures 83 x 20 m (272 x 65 ft), with a twin tower drilling derrick over a centrally located moonpool, and automated pipe and tool handling equipment for safe drill floor operations. Equipment includes downhole and seabed sampling and testing systems rated for 3,000 m (9,842 ft) water depth.

Fugro Voyager is built to Comfort Class COMF-V(3) standards with accommodation for up to 60 crew. A large soil laboratory is centrally located next to the drill floor. Other areas include client offices, a conference room, day rooms, and a gymnasium.

“With our specialist resources we are well-placed to help customers reduce the risks associated with wells and infrastructure as they venture into these remote expanses,” said Jerry Paisley, managing director, Fugro Singapore. “By permanently stationing this purpose-built deepwater asset in the region we are improving availability for our Asia/Pacific customers and providing better workability to meet their project requirements.”

The vessel’s first contract will be off northwest Australia, performing work to assist foundation design for seabed infrastructure. It will conduct seabed in situ testing, and large-diameter piston cores, drilled borings, and downhole in situ tests in water depths up to 1,350 m (4,429 ft).
