HOUSTONTata Steel has completed a $150-million project to provide pipe for the Discovery Producer Services L.L.C. gas pipeline in Keathley Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico. Discovery is a joint venture between Williams Partners L.P. and DCP Midstream Partners L.P.

Tata supplied the Keathley Canyon Connector with 214 mi (345 km) of 20-in. diameter submerged arc welded line pipe, weighing more than 110,000 metric tons (121,254 tons). This was manufactured at the company’s 42-in. mill in Hartlepool, northeast England. The pipe was laid in water depths of up to 7,380 ft (2,250 m).

The company can produce double submerged arc welded (DSAW) line pipe at the Hartlepool plant, which it claims features the world’s strongest edge crimping and “O” press combination in the world. This allows manufacture of thicker wall DSAW pipes even in smaller diameters, helping them resist extreme collapse pressures in the deepest waters.

Tata also produces high frequency induction (HFI) welded pipe for reel lay projects, and pipe-in-pipe solutions for high-pressure/high-temperature pipelines and risers, spools and bends.

At OTC, Tata will highlight other contracts it has worked on, providing line pipe for deepwater conditions in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, the UK, and Russia.
