GDI Qatar jackup close to delivery

Offshore staff

SINGAPORE – Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry has inaugurated the newbuild jackup Al Jassra at the PPL shipyard.

Owner Gulf Drilling International (GDI) recently signed a contract with Maersk Oil for use of the rig on the Al Shaheen field offshore Qatar, starting around mid-year. It will work for Maersk for four years with options for up to two more.

The BMC375 Pacific Class jackup has a 75-ft (23-m) cantilever with accommodation for 150 personnel.

Al Jassra is the first of three new offshore rigs being built for GDI. The company aims to add seven new rigs to its fleet (comprising three offshore and two onshore rigs, and two accommodation jackup barges) during 2014.
