Deepwater North Uist find extends west of Shetland’s gas frontier

ABERDEEN, UK – BP has discovered gas condensate in the deepwater North Uist exploration prospect west of Shetland.

The drillship Stena Carron drilled the 213/25c-1V exploration well to target several reservoir objectives, most significant of which was North Uist, according to partner Faroe Petroleum.

At TVD of 4,700 m (15,420 ft) the well encountered gas condensate in sandstone reservoirs in the target section. Following collection of wireline logs, pressure data and side-wall cores, a full formation and volume evaluation is in progress.

Early analysis suggests variable reservoir quality. The section containing the shallower Cardhu prospect shows traces of hydrocarbons. Surrounding blocks 213/20b, 214/16b, 213/25c are near Chevron’s probable Rosebank oil development on the Corona Ridge.

Graham Stewart, CEO of Faroe Petroleum, said: “The result proves another working hydrocarbon system in the frontier west of Shetlands which is good news for further prospectivity in these UK waters. The partnership will now undertake extensive analysis of the considerable volumes of data and samples collected from the well operations before deciding on the next steps.”
