Subsea 7 to link two fields to new Montrose platform

Offshore staff

LUXEMBOURG Talisman Sinopec Energy UK has contracted Subsea 7 (Oslo Børs: SUBC) for subsea installations in the UK central North Sea.

Under the $285-million contract, Subsea 7 will conduct project management, engineering, procurement, fabrication, and installation of two 5-km (3-mi) pipeline bundles tying back Cayley field to the new bridge-linked platform (BLP) at the Montrose production complex.

Additionally, the company will procure, fabricate, and install a 17.5-km (10.8-mi) production pipeline, water injection pipeline, gas lift pipeline, and control umbilical to tie back the Shaw field to the BLP.

The pipeline bundle will be taken to its offshore location using the Subsea 7-pioneered controlled depth tow method. This involves fabrication, assembly, and testing of pipelines, control lines, umbilical tubing, carrier pipe, and towhead structures at the company’s specialist site near Wick, northern Scotland, before launching into Sinclair’s Bay.

The pipeline bundle is then placed between two tugs and towed to the offshore location at a controlled depth below the surface. On arrival, the bundle is lowered to the seabed, maneuvered into position, and the carrier pipe and towheads are flooded to stabilize the bundle into its final position.

Engineering and project management for the new project will be performed from Subsea 7’s Aberdeen office, with offshore operations slated for 2014 and 2015.
