Lundin targets more oil in Edvard Grieg area offshore Norway

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – The semisubmersible Transocean Winner has started drilling the Jorvik prospect in the Norwegian North Sea for Lundin Petroleum.

Well 16/1-17 is in license PL338, close to the Edvard Grieg field.

The chief objective is to prove the presence of oil-bearing sandstones and conglomerates in a separate basin directly east of Edvard Grieg. Lundin estimates potential resources at 46 MMboe. Planned TD is 2,075 m (6,808 ft) below mean sea level. Drilling is expected to last about 50 days.

In PL501, Lundin’s latest appraisal well on the Johan Sverdrup field has reached target depth. The semisubmersible Bredford Dolphin is drilling well 16/3-5 on the southeastern part of the field.

The well has drilled through reservoir sections mainly comprising good quality Volgian reservoir sand and Zechstein carbonates. It encountered the top of the Volgian reservoir sandstone at 1,893 m (6,210 ft) below mean sea level. Total gross reservoir column was about 30 m (98 ft), of which 14 m (46 ft) is gross Volgian reservoir.

The oil-bearing Zechstein limestone is in pressure communication with overlying sand and provides an upside potential.

Oil has been sampled in both reservoir zones, which will now be drillstem tested over a scheduled 20-day period.
