SPE 2012: M-I SWACO introduces new drilling fluid system

SAN ANTONIO – M-I SWACO has introduced the RHADIANT ultra-high temperature non-aqueous drilling fluid system to visitors at the SPE Annual Meeting. The company says this system eliminates drilling fluid product degradation, prevents wellbore control issues, and provides a thin filter cake for enhanced logging conditions.

Joe Bacho, president of M-I SWACO, said: “With wellbores approaching the 500ºF (260ºC) threshold, there is a need for a drilling fluid that can remain stable and deliver consistent performance throughout the processes of well construction and open hole logging.”

Stable rheology in tandem with ultra-thin and slick filter cake deposits clear the path for logging, casing, and cementing operations. These characteristics enable accurate perforation placement, optimized completions, and quality reservoir characterization, according to the company.

In an ultra-high temperature well in the Gulf of Thailand, the RHADIANT drilling fluid system delivered filtration control and filter cake quality with stable rheological properties while drilling with no lost circulation. For logging, the system enabled the customer to perform seven open hole wireline logging runs, despite the fluid remaining static for more than 90 hours.
