Seismic sweep under way in Canada's Labrador Sea

Offshore staff

HOUSTON – TGS and PGS have started a new 22,000-km (13,670-mi) multi-client 2D survey offshore Newfoundland in the Labrador Sea.

The M/V Sanco Spirit is acquiring the data using PGS’ GeoStreamer dual sensor broadband technology. Acquisition will continue through 3Q 2011, with the vessel returning next year to complete the survey.

The region covered is north of oil discoveries including Hibernia, Hebron, Terra Nova, and White Rose. The seismic survey is focused on areas currently nominated in the Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board's call for bids (NL-11-03).

Initial data will be available to clients during 4Q 2011. The survey is supported by industry funding.

"It is important for TGS to return to eastern Canada after a decade and add data coverage in an area where there is little modern seismic data available to the market,” said Stein Ove Isaksen, senior VP North & South America for TGS.

Jerry Witney, PGS’ VP North America MultiClient, said: "GeoStreamer offers clear and proven operational advantages in the harsh waters of Canada's Atlantic seaboard, where minimizing weather downtime is vital.”
