Transocean calls in Semco for semi upgrades

Offshore staff

ESBJERG, Denmark – Semco Maritime has won its second order this spring from Transocean for upgrade work on a semisubmersible rig.

Transocean Winner is a large rig capable of operating in water depths up to 1,500 m (4,921 ft). It will arrive in August at a yard and service area in Askøy north of Bergen, Norway, for a 45-50 day program.

The upgrade, which will include piping installations, is needed to prepare the rig for new projects in the Norwegian North Sea.

Work will be performed by Semco’s Danish and Norwegian divisions in cooperation with local sub-suppliers. Around 150 employees from Esbjerg and Stavanger will be seconded to work on the rig.

Bergen Group will provide the yard facilities, personnel, logistics, anchoring and catering. The contract is worth around $19.2 million to Semco, and also comprises two options for similar projects.

Recently, the company has been upgrading and repairing Transocean’s semisubmersible Polar Pioneer in Tromsø, northern Norway. It was due to sail away this past weekend.
