Marine energy developer Atlantis receives EC funding for MeyGen second phase

Marine energy developer Atlantis Resources Ltd. has been awarded US$24.6 million in European Commission Horizon 2020 grant funding to help design, build and operate the second phase of its MeyGen tidal array.

The 6-MW MeyGen Phase 1B -- also known as "Project Stroma -- will be located in Scotland's Pentland Firth adjacent to the existing 6-MW Phase 1A. The first stage began generating power in November.

The second phase is part of the Demotide project, which is comprised of a consortium consisting of Atlantis-owned Marine Current Turbines, DEME, Innosea, and Queen's UNiversity Belfast.

Demotide is intended to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of drilled foundation systems and larger rotor diameter turbines, Atlantis said, in an effort to further ready the technology for commercialization.

"The Demotide project is the next significant step in delivering cost-effective, reliable tidal stream generation for Europe," Atlantis CEO Tim Cornelius said.

MeyGen is located in Scotland's Pentland Firth and could ultimately have a capacity of nearly 400 MW, pending expansions after this phase.

HydroWorld.com reported the array had been connected to the 33 kV Ness of Quoys distribution network in June.

Atlantis acquired MeyGen through an all-share deal with MCT last May, which had in turn purchased the majority stake in the company from Siemens in February 2012.
