Authority denies license for 960-MW Canafisto hydro project in Colombia

Canafisto license denied

Autoridad Nacional de Licencias Ambientales (ANLA) has denied for the second time a license to Isagen to build the 960-MW Canafisto hydro project.

The project is planned for Antioquia department, and ANLA originally denied the license in 2015. ANLA cites the significant loss of dry tropical forest and ecological connectivity, BNamericas reports. The authority also said the water resource in areas where residents would be resettled is scarce and compensation measures proposed by Isagen would give a net negative balance.

The original anticipated completion date for this project was 2020, with an investment of US$5 billion. It was to feature a dam 100 meters high and a surface powerhouse with five turbine-generator units.

Isagen operates seven power plants with total installed capacity of 3,032 MW, 2,732 MW from hydroelectric power. The company’s 820-MW Sogamoso hydropower plant began operating in Colombia in January 2015.

HydroWorld reported that Brookfield Renewable Partners lead a consortium in the takeover of Isagen for US$2.2 billion in 2016.
