Philippine President Duterte breaks ground on 10.6-MW Pulanai, announces addition of 10 other hydropower plants

Philippines NIA Announces Plan To Bid Up to 200 Micro Hydropower Plants

The Philippines' Department of Energy has announced its plan to build 10 hydropower projects in the southern province of Bukidnon.

The agency did not reveal what the cumulative output capacity of the new plants will be, but said the facilities are to be located in Baungon, Dancagan, Impasugong, Kalilangan, Libona, Malaybalay, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, Maramag and Sumilao.

The announcement came as President Rodrigo Duterte was visiting Lumbayao to participate in the groundbreaking of the 10.6-MW Pulanai hydropower project last Friday.

The run-of-river Pulanai, also located in Bukidnon, is a joint venture between the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and Pure Energy Holding Corp. subsidiary Repower Energy Development Corp.

The parties are developing the US$133.4 million project under the name Pure Meridian Hydropower Corp. with the expectation that it is commissioned in the first half of 2019.

The Philippines' government has been aggressive in promoting the growth of the country's hydro sector as part of its overall renewable energy goals through both new development and upgrades to existing projects. also reported this year that developers are looking to exploit the island nation's marine hydrokinetic potential.
