BHEL receives contract for renovation of 360-MW Balimela hydroelectric plant in India

Balimela hydro plant

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a contract to renovate and modernize the 360-MW Balimela hydroelectric plant in India.

The contract, awarded by the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited, is worth about Rs297 crore (US$44.7 million).

Balimela, on the Sileru River in Odisha State, was expanded by 150 MW in a second stage completed in 2009 with the installation of two 75-MW turbine-generator units. Power Machines manufactured and supplied the equipment.

The six original turbine-generator units at this facility have been operating for more than 35 years, BHEL says, and renovation and modernization will restore capacity, improve efficiency, and reduce auxiliary power consumption. In fact, the units were commissioned from 1973 through 1977.

BHEL will design, engineer, manufacture, supply, dismantle, erect, test and commission critical parts of turbines, generators, governors, controls and instrumentation, protection, and balance of plant.

Odisha Hydro Power owns seven operating hydropower projects with a total capacity of 2,008.5 MW. The company also has the 6-MW Potteru small hydro project under construction.

In September, HydroWorld.com reported that BHEL received a contract to rehabilitate and upgrade the 180-MW Baira Siul station in Himachal Pradesh.
