The China Gezhouba Group Co. Ltd. reached a significant milestone last week when it completed construction of a dam associated with the 450-MW Rudbar Lorestan hydropower plant in Iran.

CGGC marked the occasion with a ceremony that included a number of dignitaries from both countries who vowed to use the project to further even more cooperation under China's "Belt and Road" economic development initiative.

The dam is a 153-meter-high clay-core, rock-filled dam with an open spillway and two 3.4-kilometer-long water diversion systems. The dam infrastructure was built simultaneously with the Rudbar Lorestan's powerhouse, switching station and other facilities that will be outfitted while filling of the reservoir takes place.

HydroWorld.com reported that China and Iran signed an agreement to build the plant in October 2007, with 51% of its financing coming from Iran and the remainder from China.

Owner Iran Water and Power Resources Development Co. also awarded a contract that same month to CGGC to build the plant.

CGGC said the first of two 225 MW vertical Francis generating units will be put into service next March.

The project is located in the upper reaches of the Dez River Basin in the Zagros Mountains. Water will be diverted through a three-kilometer headrace tunnel into an adjacent valley to twin steel penstocks and a powerhouse on the Alkan River.
