Costa Rica reaches 150 days with all electricity coming from renewables, predominantly hydro

Hydro in Costa Rica

According to the National Center for Energy Control, Costa Rica has accumulated 150 days of all electricity production coming from renewable sources in 2016, with hydro supplying more than 80%.

Starting June 17, the country had 76 continuous days of 100% renewable electricity generation, according to a press release on the website of state-owned electric utility Institute Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).

In August, the contributing electricity sources were:

  • Hydropower 80.27%
  • Geothermal 12.62%
  • Wind 7.10%
  • Solar 0.01%

"These numbers will be powered by Reventazon. We prepared to give to Costa Rica on 16 September the largest power project in Central America, which will bring 305.5 megawatts of firm and renewable for the benefit of all sectors of the country's energy, "said Carlos Manuel Obregon, chief executive of ICE.

The first unit at Reventazon, on the Reventazon River, was connected to the national grid in April 2016. When complete, anticipated by the end of the year, the powerhouse will contain five turbine-generator units.

Between Aug. 1 and 31, wind power generation in Costa Rica dropped 42% compared with July, and these declines were backed by generation from hydro regulation reservoirs, mainly 157.4-MW Arenal, ICE says.
