Indian association’s power awards given to several hydropower companies

The Independent Power Producers Association of India named NHPC Ltd. winner of its award for Best Hydro Power Generator, with a first runner up of SJVN Ltd. and second runner up JSW Energy Ltd.

The IPPAI Power Awards recognize individuals, organizations, Indian states, state electricity regulatory commissions and distribution companies that have significantly contributed to the development of the power sector in India.

The 2016 awards were given Sept. 24 at the 17th Regulators & Policymakers Retreat.

NHPC is a government of India enterprise incorporated in 1975 to plan, promote and organize an integrated and efficient development of hydroelectric power. The company has an installed base of 6,587 MW from 20 fully owned hydropower stations and one partially owned. NHPC is engaged in the construction of four projects with a total installed capacity of 3,210 MW and has an ambitious plan to add about 6,000 MW of hydropower capacity by the end of 2022.

SJVN is a joint venture between the government of India and government of Himachal Pradesh, incorporated in 1988. The company has an installed capacity of 1,959.6 MW, 1,912 of which come from hydropower. JSW Energy operates 4,531 MW of power generation capacity, 1,391 MW of which is hydropower. The company has a vision of achieving 10,000 MW of capacity by 2020.

IPPAI and Deloitte do preliminary screening of all nominations received, and jury members evaluate the results submitted by IPPAI and short list eligible entries before finalizing the winners.

Many other awards are given, including Best Thermal Power Generator, Best Solar Developer, Best Wind Developer, Best Performing Distribution Company, Utility Achieving Fastest Rural Electrification in the Last Decade, Best Transmission Utility, Best State Load Dispatch Center, and Most Progressive State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

In addition, many innovations are recognized under a variety of categories, including waste heat recovery, energy conservation, energy efficiency, energy storage, fuel storage and techno-commercials.
