Work is proceeding on plans to install an Archimedes screw turbine at Hanover Pond Dam in Meriden, Ct., with the pond drawn down about 6 feet earlier this week to allow for construction, according to local newspaper Record-Journal.

New England Hydropower Co. is adding the turbine-generator unit to the dam on the Quinnipiac River, after receiving a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license for the project and state and local permits.

Bancroft Contracting Corp. of Maine is the general contractor on the project.

The potential generating capacity of the project has not been disclosed.

In April 2016, New England Hydropower said on its website that the facility would be producing power by late autumn of 2016, but that report also said the facility would be “built this summer.”

In March, a fish “crowder” was installed in the fish ladder at Hanover Pond Dam, with an underwater camera and solar-powered recording system. This monitoring system was developed in concert with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as part of an agreement to monitor annual migrations, pre- and post-construction at the small hydro facility.
