MHK turbines possible for India's power infrastructure

IMP Power Ltd.

IMP Powers Ltd. (IMP) announced last week it has entered into an agreement with Germany-based Smart Hydro Power GmbH Ltd. (SHP) to market 5 kW marine hydrokinetic (MHK) Free Stream Turbines, also known as zero head or in-stream turbines, in India.

Monetary details of the agreement and a deployment scheme are not immediately available. But, India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said it encourages and supports the use of MHK turbine technology as an important source of renewable energy in the country.

The units, according to an IMP press release, can be installed in canals, tailraces at conventional hydropower plants, in rivers and in free-flowing streams.

“When power is produced and distributed at base load, the technical loses are lower by around 8% to 10%,” said Dr. Karl Kolmsee, SHP chief executive officer.

According to the CEO, when this is extrapolated and measured for hundreds of such turbines in a system, the energy saving would likely be substantial, thus contributing to the reduction of technical losses.

Kolmsee also said the technology, coupled with low infrastructure cost, makes the turbines a cost-effective solution for India’s growing energy needs.

IMP is seeking to deploy similar systems in Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and East African regions beginning in 2017.
