Three facilities inducted as part of Hydro Hall of Fame's Class of 2016

Hydro Hall of Fame

During the past 12 months, PennWell’s Hydro Group has had the opportunity to review more than 40 potential legacy facilities for induction into the 2016 Hydro Hall of Fame.

To qualify for induction into the Hydro Hall of Fame, facilities must have been in continuous operation for at least 100 years, providing energy to the grid, without being offline for more than three continuous months.

There are currently 41 members in the Hydro Hall of Fame and this year there are three new members:

75-MW Pointe du Bois Generation Station

Manitoba Hydro’s oldest generating station -- 75-MW Pointe du Bois -- is located on the Winnipeg River about 160 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The facility has been operating since 1911 and is still producing electricity today.

Accepting the award on behalf of Manitoba Hydro is Kelvin Shepherd, Manitoba Hydro president and chief executive officer.

62-MW Cabot Station hydroelectric facility

The 62-MW Cabot Station hydroelectric facility in Montague, Franklin County, Mass., operated by FirstLight GDF Suez, was also selected for induction into the 2016 Hydro Hall of Fame.

At the time the plant was constructed, Cabot was the largest hydroelectric facility east of Niagara Falls.

Accepting the award on behalf of FirstLight Power Resources is Gus Bakas, director of Massachusetts Hydro.

250-kW Miyashiro No 1. Power Plant

Located in Nagano, Japan, the 250-kW Miyashiro No. 1 Power Plant is Japan’s oldest documented continuously operating hydropower facility.

This the first time a facility outside of North America has been elected for induction into the Hydro Hall of Fame.

Accepting the award are Akihiro Niwa, director of the Washington, D.C., office of the Chubu Electric Power Company Inc. and Shinsuke Ishihara, engineer for Chubu Electric Power Co.

In the following months, be sure to check, Hydro Review and HRW-Hydro Review Worldwide to read a detailed article about each facility, view historical and current images of each facility, and watch videos about the legacy plants.
