Bolivian government advancing prioritization of 254-MW Ivirizu hydropower plant

The Bolivian government is moving forward with development of the 254-MW Ivirizu hydropower plant following the approval of legislation by the country's lower house last week.

The legislation names the project as a priority of national interest, though it must still be passed by the Bolivian senate to be officially expedited.

State-run power company Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. (Ende) said that it is working to complete Ivirizu's final design and bidding documents via its subsidiary, Electrica Valle Hermoso, and that the bidding and investment phase should begin soon.

The plant would be located in Carrasco province with a projected inauguration scheduled in 2020. Its total cost is projected at more than US$520 million.

Government officials have previously stated their intent to make Bolivia an exporter of surplus energy, with about 70% of the country's power supply to come from hydroelectric sources by 2025.

HydroWorld.com reported in April that Ende had awarded a contract to complete design studies for the 347-MW Carrizal plant. The company is also working on the 40-MW Rositas project, with the 5-MW Huacata, 120-MW Misicuni, 1,600-MW El Bala and 200-MW Miguillas also amongst facilities being developed within Bolivia.
