Tidal energy platform continues testing at EMEC

PLAT-O

Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) has arranged a US$6.54 million funding package to deploy an array of its Platform for Ocean Energy (PLAT-O) tidal energy systems at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.

PLAT-O is a taut-moored, buoyant, subsea reaction sub-system, which acts as a support structure for tidal energy converters.

According to published reports, SME’s 100 kW experimental PLAT-O yielded usable results with regard to the influence of mooring geometry on motion response in tidal systems. The testing also generated data that led to a greater understanding of how to reduce device motion to acceptable levels during the pre-tension of mooring lines.

SME relocated its offices and workshops from London to the north coast on the Isle of Wight in 2013 after it determined the Isle of Wight had the support system it needed to continue developing PLAT-O.

SME said the company has moved its operational base to Orkney and will deploy a 240 kW platform that uses Schottel Hydro Instream Turbines (SIT 250), the production of which will commence this summer, also in Scotland.

In a press release from the company, SME Managing Director Jason Hayman said, “We are really excited to be moving forward with our community array at EMEC. This will show that second generation tidal energy technology really is commercially viable.”
