Take a hydro plant technical tour at HydroVision International 2016

Technical hydro tours

Attendees at HydroVision International 2016 can choose from several different technical tours to nearby hydro plants.

HydroVision International, the world’s largest hydroelectric industry event, is behind held the week of July 25 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minn., U.S.

Monday, July 25, features a full-day tour.

The Exploring Hydro History tour takes participants to Eagle Creek Renewable Energy’s 9.5-MW Sartell project and Minnesota Power’s 4.5-MW Little Falls facility. These two powerhouses, on the Mississippi River northwest of Minneapolis, have been long-standing fixtures on the Minnesota landscape. Sartell was built between 1905 and 1908 to supply mechanical power for grinders at the Watab Paper Mill. The Little Falls site has been home to several dams, starting in 1888 with the current dam completed in 1921, along with the current powerhouse with three turbine-generator units.

Registrations for this tour must be received by July 7. The tour costs $125 and lunch is included.

The half-day tour on Tuesday, July 26, takes attendees to three exciting facilities in downtown Minneapolis. This tour visits the 13.9-MW Upper St. Anthony Falls plant, St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and the 10-MW Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam facility. Upper St. Anthony Falls was built in 1882 at the site of early sawmills to power arc lights. Lower Saint Anthony Falls features 16 StrafloMatrix turbine-generators. And SAFL is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research and educational facility at the University of Minnesota.

Registrations must be received by July 5. The tour costs $75.

In addition, a technical tour of the 18-MW Twin Cities hydroelectric facility will be offered to attendees of the Waterpower Hydro Basics Course, on a first-come, first-served basis. The dam at this site was built in 1917 and the powerhouse in 1924. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners acquired the facility from Ford Motor Company in 2008.
