Hydro Tasmania takes over GE engineering workshop

Australian utility Hydro Tasmania has assumed control of an engineering workshop in Cambridge in order to better service its fleet of hydroelectric projects.

The plant, formerly operated by Alstom, was to have been shuttered following General Electric's purchase of the company in November.

"Hydro Tasmania considered carefully the implications of the Alstom facility not operating, and decided that it was both financially sensible and important from an asset risk management perspective to take over the lease of the workshop facility and retain the capability of this specialized machinery in the state," chief operating officer Evangelista Albertini said.

The facility -- which specializes in large machining work -- employed 12 while operated by GE, though Hydro Tasmania said it will cut the workshop's staff to seven.

"No other facility in Tasmania and only a limited number nationally have this capability," Albertini said. "The Cambridge facility will provide the specialist large-scale machining that other service providers do not offer."

Hydro Tasmania operates 30 hydropower plants that have a cumulative output capacity of more than 2,600 MW.
