Ferrovial receives contract to build 118-MW Daivoes hydro in Portugal

Building Tamega complex

A consortium headed by Ferrovial Agroman has received a contract from Spanish utility Iberdrola to build the 118-MW Daivoes dam and hydro plant in northern Portugal.

The plant, on the Tamega River, will cost more than €90 million (US$102 million), according to a Ferrovial press release, and is to be completed in 56.5 months.

The work involved building a concrete arch gravity dam 77.5 m high and 264 m long, as well as a powerhouse containing two turbine-generator units. Ferrovial says it also will build a 388-m-long tunnel to divert the river and a weir 71 m long and 10.5 m high, located 2.2 km downstream from the dam.

MSF is a member of the consortium.

Ferrovial Agroman says Daivoes is the first of four main contracts to be awarded by Iberdrola as part of the 1,158-MW Tamega river hydroelectric project. The powerhouses will be Gouvaes, Padroselos, Alto Tamega and Daivoes. Two will be conventional hydro stations and two will be pumped storage. The complex is expected to be commissioned in 2023.

Ferrovial also participated in building the penstock for the 112-MW Gouvaes hydroelectric plant and the inspection galleries in the Alto Tamega dam.
