Tidal array scheduled for deployment off the Isle of Wight in England

More than a year after Prime Minister David Cameron publicly announced support for the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Center (PTEC), Great Britain’s Marine Management Organization (MMO) issued a license on April 20 to Royal HaskoningDHV to deploy and operate a proposed 30-MW tidal array at the center, located off the Isle of Wight.

In January 2015, Cameron was asked about the UK’s position on tidal energy, in general, and specifically about PTEC.

He answered saying, “We want to maintain that world leading position. We want to harness the economic benefits and the environmental benefits that brings and we want to see local centers of expertise and from what I can see the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Center sounds like exactly the sort of exciting initiative that we should be supporting.”

Infrastructure construction at PTEC is expected to begin in 2017 and be ready for tidal devices from late 2018.

In a press release, Royal HaskoningDHV said, “PTEC hopes to be fully operational within the next three years and will provide safe, clean reliable energy, enough to power 15,000 homes. This project is instrumental in accelerating the growth of the tidal industry, which will help the UK meet its long term security needs and low carbon targets.”

Technical Director Frank Fortune said, “Royal HaskoningDHV has consented over 90 MW of commercial wave and tidal projects across the UK since 2004, with PTEC the latest success story. The UK is well placed to lead the way in tidal stream energy and PTEC is placed to be a major catalyst in driving the potential of the entire marine renewables industry.”

PTEC is the largest consented tidal stream energy project in England and Wales.

Royal HaskoningDHV was appointed to lead PTEC’s consenting works, including the environmental impact assessment, the company said. IT Power delivered the Front End Engineering Design for PTEC’s core infrastructure.
