Duke Energy names new chief officer of fossil fuel and hydroelectric generation

Regis Repko

On March 16, Duke Energy announced senior vice president Regis Repko, a 30-year veteran of the company, as its chief fossil/hydro officer, effective April 1.

Repko succeeds Charlie Gates, who is leaving the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company to become executive vice president of power operations at Calpine Corp. in Houston, Texas.

Duke Energy said Repko’s new position includes responsibility for the operation of the company's regulated fossil fuel and hydropower generation fleets in six states, including outage and maintenance services.

In the U.S., Duke Energy operates 30 conventional hydropower plants and two pumped-storage generation facilities for a combined installed capacity of about 3,525 MW.

Hydroelectric assets also constitute more than 70% of Duke Energy International’s generating capacity in Latin America. The company said its hydroelectric facilities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru can produce more than 3,040 MW.

Trained as a nuclear engineer, Repko currently oversees nuclear governance, projects and engineering, and previously was the company’s senior vice president for nuclear operations. He is also serving as chairperson of the Academy Council of the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

The company lists Repko as a native of Jeannette, Pa., who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Repko has been employed by Duke Energy since 1985 when he joined the company as a junior engineer and was assigned to Oconee Nuclear Station, located on Lake Keowee in Oconee County, S.C.
