Renewable energy generator Albion Community Power has committed US$7.2 million to help develop a pair of small hydropower plants to be located in the Scottish Highlands.

Benefitting from ACP's financing will be the 400-kW Liatre Burn and 500-kW Bruachaig projects, which will be located near Loch Mullardoch in Glen Cannich and Kinlochewe in the western highlands, respectively.

ACP said construction of both run-of-river plants has already begun and that the pair should be commissioned by the end of the year.

"Institutional demand for community-scale renewable energy continues to grow and ACP is well-placed to benefit from this trend," ACP chair Volker Beckers said. "We look forward to working on both schemes, as well as developing a further pipeline of projects."

Liatre Burn and Bruachaig add to ACP's portfolio that already includes the Chaorach and River Arkaig micro hydro plants.

The London-based company's investors include the UK Green Investment Fund (GIB), Strathclyde Pension Fund (SPF) and Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF).
