Developers moving forward with Northern Ireland's 100-MW Fair Head tidal energy array

Fair Head Tidal Energy Array Site

Developers of the 100-MW Fair Head tidal energy project have announced their plan to move forward in licensing the array with the goal of beginning construction in 2018.

The project -- to be located east of Fair Head off the northern Antrim coast -- is being developed by a joint venture including Ireland's DP Marine Energy and Belgium's Bluepower NV.

The developers said they have finished a series of assessments and surveys which will now be incorporated into an application for a marine license.

"In the past three years we have engaged with a wide range of project stakeholders, including local communities and government departments," DP Energy project manager Clodagh McGrath said in a release. "We will of course continue this engagement process as we finalize our plans, and look forward to hosting more local open days this spring before we complete our application."

The open days will be used to inform the public about results of the studies in anticipation of filing the marine license application this summer.

Informational materials provided by Fair Head Tidal show that an initial 10 MW installation will use Atlantis Resources Ltd.'s SeaGen turbine units, which have already received significant testing in Northern Ireland's Strangford Lough.

If constructed, the Fair Head array could be generating power by 2020. The site will be located adjacent to a separate 100 MW marine energy project that is being developed by Tidal Ventures Ltd.
