Consortium signs deal to build 20-MW Vranduk hydroelectric plant

A joint venture led by Austria's JV Strabag AG and including Croatia's Koncar Inzinjering za Energetiku i Transport has been selected to construct the 20-MW Vranduk hydroelectric plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The US$62 million contract includes the design, construction, equipment manufacturing and installation, testing and commissioning of Vranduk. The run-of-river project is to include a dam, fish ladder, intake, power tunnel, powerhouse containing three Kaplan turbine-generators, a 6-kilometer-long reservoir, tailrace, deepening of the riverbed downstream and access roads.

The consortium were among seven groups prequalified by utility Elektroprivreda of Bosnia and Herzegovina in September 2014 to develop the plant. previously reported that the European Investment Bank approved a $52 million loan to Elektroprivreda in April 2014 for construction of Vranduk, the first hydropower project to be implemented in Bosnia in 30 years. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development approved a $46.4 million loan in 2013 for construction of Vranduk on the Bosna River, refurbishment of the 9.4-MW Una Kostela hydroelectric project, and construction of the 6.4-MW Una Kostela Annex on the Una River.
