Uganda signs US$1.9 million construction supervision contract for 5.5-MW Nyagak III small hydroelectric facility


The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd. (UEGCL) on Nov. 2 signed a US$1.9 million construction supervision agreement with Germany-based GOPA-International Energy Consultants GmbH, in association with Italian based Zollet Ingegneria, for the 5.5-MW Nyagak III hydroelectric facility on the Nyagak River in Paidha, Uganda.

The facility plans include a dam, reservoir and powerhouse that will contain two turbines. Mary Mwogeza, project coordinator Nyagak III UEGCL, said, “The total construction costs of the dam is US$17.1 million.”

Once completed (HW 9-2-15) in 2018, Nyagak III is expected to serve more than 8,500 households in the region, according to local reports. Construction is scheduled to begin in December.

The project will be developed as a public–private partnership viaa special purpose vehicle (SPV) (Genmax Nyagak Ltd.). The SPV is between UEGCL and the Hydromax Ltd. and Dott Services Ltd. consortium.
